Tubes for Ampeg SVT | Go crazy!

i preface this by saying that i have personally never owned *any* 6550 amps, so i guess that should be taken into consideration.

but i will say, that in 20 years of owning and maintaining tube amps, practically all of the most lackluster sounding tubes (IME and IMO) i have tried have all been sovteks. for example; the old wafer-base "5881" (which was really neither a 5881 *or* a 6L6). they were durable and had low microphonics, but they were completely uninspiring where i have sampled them, and their subsequent replacement "woke the amp up" in every single case. ditto the 12AX7W_ (A, B, or C IME). i keep a WA rolling around in some of my instrument cases as a "just in case", but sonically, they arent (or werent) doing any of my amps any kind of favor.

one caveat--- i think i *do* like the EH EL34's. same factory, different merch. i dont know how durable they are, but they can certainly sound great, and are also pretty cheap.

my preferred current production 6L6's are JJ or winged C svets, as seems congruent with a lot of popular opinion.

FWIW, and YMMV.

Jimmy,

I can't get to this site...what gives? Road Runner keeps telling me it can't find, and google has no info at all. :ninja::help::ninja:

Lol

Seriously though, and not to hijack the thread completely, but I'm thinking about putting Winged C's and either JJ's or Tungsols in the pre of my newly acquired Bassman 300 (a pair of the 6550's in it are blown and were that way upon trade). Anyone have any experience, comments, concerns??? Should i just leave the stock pre tubes as they are???
