Tuners (pegs) for lefty basses. Are they really different?

I have recently bought an SX lefty short scale and wanted to change the tuners.
This will be my first time.

Some web stores list right and left handed hardware separately...

Are they really different or can I buy right hand tuning pegs with no problem?

You'll need "lefty" or treble-side tuners if you're modding a left-handed bass with 4 or 5 tuners in a row. Are they Gotoh GB-7 in design (closed) or the Fender-esque open gear? How bad are the tuners, really? Have a pic?

They are not fender type.
I think some call them "butterfly" type.

Something like the ones in the Warwicks.

They look a little more like plastic than chrome but the real problem is that they do not stay in tune.

Yep, they're Gotoh style. Unless you find a great deal on some used components, the tuners may end up being worth more than the bass itself especially if you go with Hipshot or similar. Try this first:

The tuners are sealed so you're pretty much screwed in that dept. Make sure the mounting ferrules (front of headstock) are secure. Remove the the small tuner button screw (located at the tip of the "butterfly"), add a dab of blue Loctite, and re-snug whilst holding the butterfly firmly. Do not overtighten as this may distort the metal o-ring and washers / spacers positioned between the butterfly and tuner body! Allow to cure for a few hours and recheck. May help, may not but its worth a try and costs about 2 cents.

That's the GB7 type. You will need lefty tuners to replace those. Gotoh GB7's stay in tune well, that'd what you should get, though you might want too tighten the little screws on the end of the tuners first, to see if that helps.

They look like perfect replacements, but the thing you have to watch is the size of the hole they mount in. In other words the diameter of the ferrule/locking nut.

Having just replaced some SX tuners (full sized, not like yours) I can tell you that the major problem in all this is that nobody who sells tuners seems to give a hoot about telling the mounting size of anything! So basically before you order you need to take a tuner off of yours and measure the hole and ferrule outside size. And then go around various sites looking up the data on the particular model of Gotoh you want to buy. If they seem the right size then order them from the cheap place.

It's what I did an happily everything fit perfectly.
