Tuning peg gear source

My 2021 Sterling Stingray Sub Series has a cracked tuning peg gear. D String. First off, is this a common thing? I never had this happen on any instrument before. Secondly where can I source a gear or do I need the whole assembly? If so where can I source that?

I really do not want to change all 4.

no, it's not common, it's poor tuners unless you did something really bad with this one, like taking it off and using a demolition hammer to crack it, then putting back. I'd guess this is duraliminium at best.

likely all the four will fail in some time. the problem with replacing the gear is that not only the gear can fail, like tuning pegs or string posts tearing apart.

changing all tuners to decent ones is the best thing you can do, really.

Those are the typical cheap tuners used on Asian made budget instruments of many brands. Poor quality metal, poor machining, and flaking plating is very evident when you inspect them closely so it’s not surprising that we could see such an unusual break of a spur gear.

I replaced mine on a Squier with Hipshots. They fit fine but I had to reposition some mounting screw holes.

if you are in Canada, I would send you a gear for nothing. I’m sure it would fit because the music stores and eBay is awash in this poor stuff, and it’s unlikely that the outfits churning this out would spend money on retooling to keep changing the specs of the gears.

I am not in Canada but thank you anyway.
