Tuning up a 4th

I want to experiment with an instrument tuned up a fifth. I trying to estimate what gauge of string would be appropriate. Would a 30-90 set do it since 80/85 is a common A string?

Tuning a standard EADG bass up a fifth is BEAD up an octave from your typical 5 string bass.

Is that what you want, or are you really wanting to tune up a FOURTH to ADGC? At which point a 30-90 set might work okay.

Its been a rough morning... Yes, a fourth is what I meant. What an epic error on such a basic thing..

I want to take a standard tuned, E-G bass and go up a fourth to A-C. Sounds like strings are likely not an issue. Might be a little sloppy in the nut slots but probably OK for a test run. I can cut a new nut if I decide to make it permanent

I wouldn't even worry about the nut slots; you won't notice it. I've put piccolo (18-50) strings on a standard bass without recutting a nut and no issues at all.

Just use the top four strings out of a 6-string set, which is usually BEADGC.
