How do you tune your bass a 1/2 step down by ear?

To tune the E string to D#, fret the next (A) string on the 6th fret and tune accordingly. Repeat for the rest of the strings. EDIT: except the last string
For the last string, fret the string before (that's been tuned down) at the 4th fret and tune accordingly.

Fret the 6th fret of the A string and tune your E to that, then tune the rest of your strings by ear to that string like you normally would.

If you fret like Rusty said at the 4th fret to tune the last string you will go down a half step lower than you need.

Hmm... no wonder it sounded funny!

Actually, the instruction for the last string was supposed to show that it was supposed to be tuned differently from the previous strings... I didn't realise that the instructions for the first part included the last string
