Tuxedo Bass #4

Sweet! I have friends down in San Diego that shape boards, and enjoy seeing what's going on with my bassbuilding, I bet they would appreciate this build.

You ought to take it down to Moonlight for glass, they do magic in resin.

You realize that this bass can only play Surf music - right?

This is just a novelty bass - and the next (serious) one is already in plans. But I STILL don't have my PG material for Tux #3!

Can you ask your friends what the current color-tinting process is for 'glass?

I used to use what I no longer remember the name of - for adding stripes and tints to resin. Don't get old.

Yeah - 37 - almost 30 years my junior!



I just read the whole PDF from Foam E-Z, The Original One-Stop Surfboard Supply Shop and I see there's a lot of new twists to board building!

Epoxies seem to be king now and with a lot less health problems (NONE according to those guys) this may be the way to go.

This ain't your grandfather's epoxy either! Interesting was the use of water-based paints and art work that the epoxy will just go over and not have any outgassing or de-lam problems if you let it thoroughly air dry first!

Gads - a whole new world! I gotta read the file several more times and maybe even give them a call on Monday for more updating (to me) about the new technology!

I used their epoxy on my first bass- nice stuff, very clear and easy to use, so long as it is warm and dry when you apply. My friend that's been shaping the longest, though, isn't a fan of the stuff for boards. I'm not qualified to judge either way, all my boards past and present are resin. A lot of guys swear by it, though. I know polyester resin is nasty, I've never worked with it, but I get bad contact dermatitis from epoxy all the same.

My experiences have all been with the polyester resins and glass. Epoxies were for gluing broken cast iron or amalgam bits together with great big globs of fillet and at the same time, the wrong color. My, how things have changed!

I'm agonizing over the process I know verses the process I'd like to learn and try to move myself at least into the Twentieth Century at the same time.

So-o-o-o-o --- you've had epoxy experience, huh?

We may need to use the phone here in a while!

Something's wrong with the balance, eye-appeal and perhaps the execution of the design methinks.

It's definitely a niche bass but I like the outside the box look. If it were my project, to allieviate any balance issues caused by the light body I'd use Gotoh Res-O-Lite 350 tuners and a heavy bridge or other weight in the tail of the body and creative strap button positioning.

Please don't take offense - but I'd like to string people on here a little bit more. At least until the bass gets some more definition and pieces added to it.

I haven't touched it since my last series of pixs - so maybe tomorrow I'll take it all apart and try to figger where it doesn't have the eye-appeal for me. Or not - I dunnow.

Right now - and this isn't in stone - I think the body is about 20% too small. It kinda looks like a Billy Barty Boogie Board to me.

Right now I've put everything on hold since I'm in a moving situation - trying to get this all packed up and ready to go when the notice arrives that it's time to get to our new place in Montana.

As soon as I'm there Winter will be going about pretty full-on, and I suspect that with very few social (read: gigs/jams) happening in that season, I'll have a lot of time to devote to this new bass.

Having said that though - I'm not really happy with the size of the body so far and I have to up-it a little. Perhaps 15-20% larger I think to give the eye-appeal a little more impact.

Something about the current size just 'ain't penguin', if you know what I mean.
