Trent Reznor is the person that's "in charge" of the tones, but he does give musicians some freedom. With Nine Inch Nails, the goal is to recreate the sounds from the albums as best as possible while leaving room for improvisation.

Was a Swollen Pickle with NIN... If you watch the rehearsal section on the Beside You In Time DVD you can see it narrowly avoid being destroyed by Jeordie and Aaron!

Pause is at 2:08 and lo and behold, just slightly in the foreground of the nearly doomed Swollen Pickle, is that telltale bright orange box of an early Depth Charge!

I've been singing the praises of Brassmasters for a while because they sit in mixes magically. I still disagree that the Depth Charge is related. Their old site says "Brassmaster" but my ears say "Superfuzz." lol

I actually tend to agree with you. I think my JohnK Depth Charge sounds more like my Hyper Fuzz which is Superfuzz based than my old Woodchipper which was most definitely a Brassmaster.

I'd have to agree with Vegas532 as well. While I've never had the pleasure of playing a Depth Charge, coincidentally I was watching some Depth Charge demo videos (and daydreaming about owning one) on YouTube earlier today and thought to myself it doesn't sound much like a Brassmaster (and that's what people have always said about the Depth Charge) and starting going over in my head what it sounds close to that I've played. The SGFX Sasori and to a lesser extent, the EQD Fuzz Master General (which are both very close to the Superfuzz) is what I thought of and my burning desire for a Depth Charge slightly lessened. I then thought nothing of it and continued on with my day until I saw this.
