Two 2x10 rig suggestions for a beginner.

Hi everyone,

Okay, so I have posted a couple of threads on here about suggestions for rigs. I am now leaning toward getting two 2x10 light weight cabs and a head. Im not too concerned about cost at the moment, as I will be starting a new job soon that pays more. I like the idea of the two 2x10s because I am small and it's easier to carry. Not to metion it would be easier to stack and load in the car.

I would really like some advice on what sort of cabs and heads would be best for someone starting out with their first rig. I live in Australia by the way. If anyone has any links to second hand gear sites for Australia, that would also be very much appreciated.

In terms of weight for a cab or head anything under 35kgs would be ideal.

Budget is what will drive your decisions; If funds are infinite, I'd be looking at two used Berg 2x10 neos + any one of a number of nice class D heads. I have a GB shuttle 6.2 that would drive two 2x10"s fine all night long. In the past I used an Ashdown ABM500 to drive my two 2x10 epifani cabs - and without fail got compliments at every gig about how good it sounded.

If funds are NOT infinite, I'd suggest keeping an eye out for used SWR 2x10s. They won't be as nice, but they will be good. I'd still stick with a class D head.

Oh - make sure you get 8 ohm cabs. Two 4 ohm cabs can be trouble for most amps- but two 8 ohm cabs is perfect.

Hi! Welcome to TB.

If you haven't already, check out ozbassforum.com. It's "the Australian TB". Plenty of good gear and knowledgeable people on there. I managed to score a used GK MB500 for $400 AUD shipped (A STEAL in Australia). IIRC, there's a secondhand Markbass LMII on there for $600 at the moment! As for used gear sites, have a look at musicswopshop. They're Melbourne based, but some deals can be had every now and then.

Personally, if I had the cash and was dead set on buying a pair of lightweight 210s, I would go for the MarkBass 210s. I don't have much experience playing them, but I've heard some bands that use them and I can only say nice things about them. Other than that, I'm not really sure I could offer any advice.

Thanks. Some very useful info there. By the way, is the name "Berg" short for something? Or is that the actual name?

Just another question. Whats the difference between ported on the front,ported on the back and un-ported cabs? Also tweeters and horns and all that jazz, what are they for? I did a quick search on it, couldn't find much info. If someone could explain or point me in the right direction for some info, I would be very grateful. :)

i'm not too sure about the ported stuff, but if you search the forums there's bound to be answers. tweeters give top end definition, horns are more powerful than tweeters and need more amplification (i think, not sure).. the best advice i can give you is to follow your instincts and ears when it comes to tone coz no 2 bassists play the same way or have the exact same tone in mind. best of luck

How's used Peavey stuff in Australia? Here in the states you can't walk around without tripping over it. Their lower end 2x10's are going for $100 or so very often. I actually spotted an "unconventional" budget rig in the guit centr used pages recently. The prices have even gone down since I spotted them first:

Obviously, shipping would crush you to Australia, and you would still need some kind of preamp (maybe in the form of a Sansamp or similar pedal), but if used Peavey stuff is anything like it is here, there's an inexpensive 400 watt vertical 4x10 rig.

Shopping used for this is a great way to go because to can generally find decent 2x10 cabs for cheap. Starting out though and if you can find one cheap enough for you perhaps look into a 2x10 combo amp of some sorts (too many to list them all) but that way you get the amp and cab all in one package. Also if the combo can support it the ability to add another extension cabinet later if you need to is also nice. I just went from a big rig setup down to a 2x10 combo and I could not be happier...my back couldn't be either.

That's always the best idea. The rig any one of us suggests might be exactly what you need. More likely though it would not suit you at all. Some stores offer rentals. It's worth a few bucks to get your prospective choice into a band setting to see how it works for you.
