Personally I'd do one nice 5 string. Wilkins PJ5 being top of the list (I have 2). I have found no need for a 4 since all the notes are on my 5's. YMMV.
You could order something from Carvin/Kiesel. As long as you don't fall for the cosmetic but not necessary upgrades (17 different clown colors, woods, multi-piece necks) you can get something nice and reasonably price with money left over for pickup/pre upgrades. I ordered an unrouted B50 from Carvin a while back and had Nordstrand P5 added. It absolutely blew my Fender P5 away...Carvins are famous for not holding their value, so used ones are usually great deals.
At the $2K price point, you are also in used Sadowsky Metro territory. Fabulous basses...

To me that is kind of an odd question because I never looked at it that way before, 1 bass or 2? Once I see a bass I want, I go buy it and that is it. But I will add that I do own 2 Sterling Ray 34's because they are really nice basses.

As I looked at you GAS list I saw a German Warwick. I would highly recommend getting a Fretless German Warwick Corvette. They can be found for $600 used. That will give you $1400 for a second bass. There are many world class bass available used for that price. I have found Alembic and Mike Lull basses for less than that. It is not necessary to spend $2000 on a bass, unless there is something very specific your looking for. More money will not always get you something you love.
My #1 gigging bass is a Musicman Sterling I got for $650. I like gigging with it more than my Alembic basses. Just take your time and find a bass you really connect with.
