Two Cool Basses

These are just two really nice basses I have played in the last 24 hours. I added a poll just to see which one folks feel sounds the best. I know this not apples to apples. I am just have some fun.
They both sound good. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Stingray sound and while I like a nice Jazz, I tend to gravitate towards P/J or P. They both sound good at what they do. It's just preference.
If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably go for the Stingray 5 Special just because I know it work better for me ergonomically.

A stingray and a jazz. They each get their respective jobs done. Need one of each!
Funny. My "dream bass" is a Sadowsky NYC, but I love my Stingray Special.
The Stingray... I don't know how else to describe it. It just "punches" hard. Every note sounds intentionally "in your face" even when playing lightly. None of my other basses play like it, so it's a very enjoyable departure. And the neck is so smooth!
On tone alone, I voted for the Stingray, but I still have my long-distance ambition to one day own a NYC.

I have to admit that I do love the tone of that Jazz. I know I would not make full use of the 24 frets, but it is a cool bass.

I thought the Sadowsky sounded cold and lifeless compared to the Ray.
The sound of the Ray has more body and oomph so that would be my choice.
I usually prefer the sound of a jazz bass compared with a Ray but in this specific context, it’s the other way around.

That’s interesting because I reallly like both of them, but we are all unique.
Curious, what is it that gives a Stingray its "sound," is it just the MM pickup? I've never had the chance to play one yet.
It's a combination of the pickup, pickup placement and the preamp. I think #1 is the pickup placement though.
Exactly, that's why I both these:
Doc that Stingray Special 5 H sounds very good but the sunburst Sadowsky J sounds pretty cool too, especially with the bridge pickup cranked up on that Jaco song!

Well, Doc; you know you lost me at the "5", but... yes they're both pretty darn nice. Personally? The Sadowsky's offset Jazz body would be a deal killer for me; those body's just don't fit me well at all. As for the 5H? Well... I do love my 4HH Stingray Special. The H's I've played were really nice, but... the things that they're famous for? They're things that I just don't need. And, all the other things - and tones - they can do? With all the basses I already own, I just can't see the need. OTOH, the 4HH can give me things I can't really get from my other basses...

I bought a Sadowsky P/J 5 string about 7 months ago and absolutely love it. Although I can’t say it’s the greatest thing since night baseball, I can tell you that it’s good enough to prevent me from wanting or needing something better and a lot more expensive.
