Two questions on patching Volume and Expression pedals

I can't seem to find anything online on where to patch these. I recall having heard years ago a volume pedal is the first thing the instrument should go through on a pedalboard, is this correct?

And my second question is in regards to an expression pedal, I'm using it on a delay pedal, does its 'EXP' output replace the normal 'OUT' or do I need to patch both? And which of these has to connect to the next pedal?

Volume pedal placement depends on desired impact of the volume going into your other effects. Some effects respond differently to the signal input into them. Therefore changing volume before the effect may or may not be a desired thing. Generally I would put a volume pedal anywhere before delay and reverb in your chain depending on how you want it to work with your other effects. But you might also like it after delay and reverb. Will need to experiment for the best placement for you.

Volume pedal is just an effect that controls the audio signal

Expression pedal is only connected to effects that have expression pedal inputs. Expression pedals control a parameter of the effect, not audio signal. It allows control by your foot rather than a knob on the pedal. The output still needs to be patched or you would have no sound.
