Two Tone Controls On A Passive?

Hey Folks

My appologies if this has already been covered, but my searches have not turned up any answer to this. If it has been covered, please feel free to direct me there.

I was told that if I had two tone controls on a passive bass (one ctrl per P/U), they could not react independantly of one another.

Rather than just one tone control, I thought if I could roll off the highs from the bridge and roll off the lows from the neck (as an extreme example), that would give me more versatility.

I'm confused, so... What do you guys think?

Mostly because I truly dislike messing with two separate vols. However, I am considering using a stacked vol/vol, once I find a stacked knob(s) with some good friction between the two, so as to use them as a single/master once they've been set the way I like at that moment in space & time. So that part should be easily remedied.

But, not to toss aside your suggestion Philbiker, it's a dual tone control setup that has me confused. I've gotten the impression that it's not really practical in use; that it won't really give me the versatility I'm looking for.

It works on a Les Paul. Works on a Stack Knob Jazz Bass. Why not on a bass? I would think you should be able to find the stacked pot you're looking for. You may have to do some digging but I'm sure it exists. You would then use a master pan as well? That's a lot of pots in the mix.

They interact with each other on both the Les Paul and the stack knob jazz. No way around this.

Nope, no pan/blend. I was originally thinking - Master Vol + Dual Tone (1 per P/U), but if I need to go with a stacked vol/vol, I certainly can.

If both PUs are open, the tone pot will work on both.
Typically on a Les Paul, you adjust them individually and switch from one PU to the other. If you're in middle position, tone pots will work on both PUs.
It's not negative, just the way it is.

Ahh! I get it now. Duh!!
When both PUs are on, either tone cntrl will work both PUs. In that situation, I cannot work the bridge and neck separately from one another.

It took me a bit, but now I savvy. Thanks man.

Hmmm. I'm guessing that would give me a longer, perhaps smoother even, tapering off of each (lows & highs) then, eh?
