Uber Cab Owners: I need your help.

Hello All,

I have done my research and I am going to be pulling the trigger on a Genz-Benz ShuttleMax 12 and I can only afford one cab to go with it right now. I am looking at either the Uber 4x10 or 2x12 and I want you get opinions on which cab configuration would be the most versatile. FYI, my basses are a 2010 Rickenbacker 4003 & 2008 Rickenbacker 4003FL (fretless) and both are strung with Fender 9050CLs (Flats) and my music interests are mainly rock, but I like some jazz, and a little blues and r&b. I play both pick and fingerstyle. This will be my first head/cab purchase and my only bass amp experience is with an Ampeg RocketBass 100 combo I got in 2000.
I really want to know what the pros and cons of one cab configuration over another is, especially what you give up in going with a particular cab as I would assume you can't have it all in one cab. Having said that, the million dollar question is which cab would come as close to the all-in-one solution for me based on what info I have provided so far?

Ah, I knew there was something I forgot to mention... I don't live anywhere near a place to try these out, so I will have to use TB, YouTube and interwebz to make my decision and buy online, hence being not sure whether to go 2x12 or 4x10. Since I am still new to the head/cabs world, what is the most common cab configuration in the bass world? It seems like in the guitar world it is some 12" configuration.

I've been playing through the Uber 212 for a couple of years now and it can meet your described playing styles. I haven't played through the Uber 410 but I do know there are a couple of videos out there comparing the 212 and 410.

Also, I have just decided to sell my ShuttleMax 12 and will be posting it up on TalkBass within the next week or so. It's a fantastic amp, I'm just ready for something different. If you're interested send me a PM.

I'm a fellow Ric player, and huge fan of the Uber 212. What the 410 will have over the 212 is volume, so if you need to be loud, go with the 410. Otherwise, the 212 is a plain awesome bass cab- punchy, full bodied tone, and plenty loud on it's own. I've been through tons of gear, and my Uber 212 put an end to my search for the perfect "one cab solution".

A fellow Ric player! What Rics have you run thru the 2x12? Also, what head are you running? I love details!

To my ear, when I was facing the same decision the 410 had ample bottom with superior clarity when compared directly with the Uber 212, which is the main reason I went with it.

Not to confuse the issue, but the Genz Benz XB3 series is under the radar, but I also demo'd those cabs and faced a very difficult decision between the Uber 410 and XB3 410. The Uber has a more modern, middy sound, while the XB3 has a slightly more "traditional", old-school ceramic cab type of sound. After 2 years with my Uber, I'm actually giving some consideration to switching to an XB3.
