It’s a actually regrets/remorse about missed chances, feelings still there, but for whatever reason, resignation that it’s perhaps too late to act on those feelings. Scott Walker’s “Duchess” is somewhat similar.
That’s a “break-up” song? I thought is was about a certain type of Californian excess/decadence in the 70’s.

Paul Simon's 50-ways to lose your lover would get my vote. Funny as can be (chorus does it) and does put it in perspective for you.
