I was just about ready to consider myself GAS free until I stumbled upon this thread. It reminded me of a Jack Read Custom P I owned a ways back that had an Aero Pe Bass 4 Type 1 pickup with a series/parallel switch....it was probably the best sounding P I’ve ever heard. It got me wanting to pick one up for my RW, but after hearing that Arcane clip....I’m torn. I’m a TI guy so that clip was perfect for me.

Any direct comparisons between a standard Lollar P and the 65 Arcane?

I'm in doubt between david allen and klein 62. Could anyone tell me the differences between them? I will use .1uf paper in oil capacitor and 250k pots. I use roundwounds because I play a lot with pick.

I own both pickups and they are my absolute two favorite with the Arcane 65 coming on top.
They are very similar but the Arcane 65 has a harmonic richness the Lollar does not quite achieve.
If you like the the Lollar, chances are you will be very happy with the Arcane 65.

I love mid-'64 to '66ish grey bottom pickups that sound like that in the video. If I'm using an alder/rosewood nitro finished P-bass with an appropriate Ampeggy tube rig what pickups should I be looking at?

Definitely a great tone. Would have loved to hear a more clean version but those mids are where the magic lies in P bass tone. I find a lot of stock P pickups are severely lacking in natural upper midrange which leads to a pretty dull, and boomy tone in a live mix.....IMHO

Here's my G&L SB-1 direct from the board. I squashed it a bit but that's it, except for the octave during intro, it's straight up, pre-EQ. I had the tone rolled back a bit. Skip to 2:30 or so for the slappy bits. I've put this pickup into two other basses as well... My fave pickup.

Most of the pups originally discussed in the thread would work. Imo/ime, stay away from overwounds for the tone you seek. I wouldn't go past +5%, if that. So we're talking normal-wind Lollars, Fralins, Arcane 65 (my personal fav), Klein Epic 62, Aguilar '60s, etc. I think you'd probably have the best of luck w an Arcane or Lollar. I haven't heard or played a Klein so I can't recommend it, but it sounds like this pup is at least as good as the Arcane and Lollar for authentic '60s P tone w/o too much of company signature tone baked in. I hear "signature" tone baked in pups like the EMG GZR, and to a lesser extent, the Fralins.

never heard the klein, but the DA is by far my favorite P i have tried, and I have tried a lot. a perfect mix of 60s P and 70s P. It is great across the entire spectrum. retains the aggressive 70s P sound but sonehow also sounds smooth and big. no idea how he does it. i ended up buying 3 P pickups just so i have extras in case anything ever happened to it. FYI his J pups are incredible as well

I’m planning on swapping out the pickup in my Fender RW and am torn between the Arcane 57 vs. 65. I probably can’t go wrong with either, but it’s hard to say without hearing both. Anyone who has have a preference?

Thanks @Laurent ! What makes you lean towards the 65 over the 57 if you don’t mind me asking?

I definitely like the 65 clips I heard here a LOT...but part of me says I should go with the 57 since that’s more in line with the model the RW is aiming to replicate.

To add to the list, I have some Maida Vale MVB-1P Low Rider's that I really love. Full, solid p-bass sound at a really great price. Hand made in the UK. There is very little info around on them but I took a chance (hard not to at the price) and they are keepers. You can only buy them directly from the maker via ebay ( Maida Vale MVB-1P Low Rider P-Bass Pickup Alnico 4 (A4) 4 Conductor 8944737985266 | eBay )

I use them wide open with Fender flats fwiw.
