Try as many different kinds of pickup as you can afford. Although some may work better, per se (or not) with different value pots and/or maybe even types/brands of strings too. PawleeP
I just ordered a Novak PB-V for my American Original 50s P-Bass. Excited to see what it sounds like.

I ordered one last week too, as well as a J pickup. It’s currently somewhere between California and Australia.
you know I don’t hate the 58 AVRI pickup, but I’m very curious to see if the PB-V is a bit more balanced from string to string as well as a) how the output differs and b) how much brighter I assume it will be etc.
Did you give Curtis any notes on how you want it to sound/how you want it wound?
Not sure if this helps or is considered boutique but I got a Lollar P bass pickup on this site when I was looking for something more classic sounding for my 72 p bass and am really happy with it. Also simultaneously changed strings to Labella low tension flats and it’s exactly what I was looking for. For a description I spent the rest of the day playing along with old Stevie Wonder stuff and it totally nails it.

Installed them tonight though, but could only play for a few minutes to check that they’re working. Off to practise tomorrow night, will give them a good run and see how they sound.
Installed the David Allen in my P-Bass and they sound amazing, lots of growl and punch. They are very similar to the Seymour Duncan SPB-1 but with little more bite to them. Great pickups for sure.
Lollar announced a new P pickup last week. Looks (and sounds) pretty sweet. I love their regular P so might have to try this one in a 50s style ash/maple build I'm working on. Precision 90
They sound pretty similar to me. Maybe the Lollar has a bit less mids. Low end of the Lollar kind of reminds me of Zep somehow. Now you got me thinking about that Novak PB-CC again though. Damn, tough choice.
I had a Klein epic 62 p bass,didnt like them.Made the bass sound dark.
Bare knuckle 58 I have installed now in an AVRI p bass,bright and punchy,more than the usual 57 style pickups.

You can learn...it's not difficult. There are a number of good youtube videos that will show you how.
If you’re just switching out one pickup for another, it couldn’t be easier either. Just take note of where the last pickup was wired to, the new pickup wires go to the exact same spot.
Assuming you don’t have a soldering iron either, but for something like this a cheap one from your local hardware store will do fine.
