"Ultralite" vs "regular" tuners.

Hi guys. I was about to change tuners in my bass,and I kinda can't decide.

I tried Hipshot Ultralight,they are pretty good. Great quallity. I was wondering how would they compared to Hipshot HB series?

I'm asking this 'couse Ultralight has only 1 screw,compared to HB which has 4 screws.

I don't "like" idea of having 1 screw tuner,but I like idea of light-weight tuners.

Ultralites work just fine with just one screw. Much of the stability comes from the fact the unit tightens down from the front with a barrel nut. On the HB it's an un-threaded barrel washer so more screws are needed.

Don't know what bass you're thinking of here but Gotoh RES-O-LITE tuners are even lighter than the Hipshots and work every bit as well.

I switched from Hipshot U/Ls to the Gotoh Res-O-Lite GB350 and find the Gotohs not only lighter but smoother in operation.

Yes, the single screw is an anchor: all it does is keep the tuner from spinning laterally. They're very nice and the product support is second-to-none. If you have budgetary considerations, the Hipshot "licensed" products are a cost-conscious alternative...you can find them here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I have no firsthand experience with the Gotohs.

I have Hipshot Ultralites on my custom bass and won't go back. The only other tuners I would consider are Schaller or Gotoh minis for the same reason.

Here is the main reason to go with light weight tuners: weight. When I assembled my custom bass, the traditional "elephant ear" tuners weighed about four ounces each, or about a pound for the set. The light weight tuners weighed only about two ounces each, or about a half-pound for the set. That's a full half-pound of suspended weight saved. That may not seem like that much, but 1) neck dive is cured permanently, and 2) your back will be much better off after a 3-hour gig.

I recently put the Ultralights on my CIJ Mustang. As someone else pointed out - they do lock down w/the bolt on the front, so the one screw is adequate to hold in place. I've been very happy with these tuners.

I did notice a slight change in tone when moved from the stock tuners, but nothing to get excited about.

I've have Ultralights on one of my Hamers for a couple of years now. No problems at all.
