I never had SX bass, but I had SX guitar and got rid of it. The reason was inconsistent frets. It was impossible to set the intonation, because they don't put frets in the right spots.

My Jaguar has a great neck, the fret ends are nicely finished vs the Bronco - I've owned two of the latter, one of which had very sharp fret ends and I needed to spend some time with the fret end file. The tuners on the Jag are also better quality than the ones that come on the Bronco (one of the gears was partially stripped on the Bronco, though I replaced the tuners with full size.) The pickup on the Jag sound great compared to the slightly thin-sounding Bronco. The Bronco is a great platform for modifications - I still have mine, but it's far from stock. The Jaguar was perfectly usable right out of the box.

Having said that, I think you'd like the slim neck on the Mikro more than either Squier. Another good cheap SS to consider is the Gretsch Junior Jet, I've seen a few used examples Invalid Link Removed.

I second (or third) the Squire Jaguar Short Scale. I had one it was really cool, good quality, sounded great. I got LaBella deep talkin' flats for it and the neck held up just fine with the high tension. I also got the fender short scale bass gig bag, which fit well. Only sold because I personally didn't really dig the short scale thing.

I have also had and liked Squire Vintage Modified PJ bass, VM jazz, VM jaguar 34" scale with a PJ configuration, a Classic Vibe jazz (very nice indeed).

If theft potential is low, you can do what I did with my current VM jazz -- pick up a good set of used pickups (I have Lollar's in mine), solder in some new quality pots and cap with good cloth insulated wire. And honestly, I could never hear the difference between my Squire VM jazz with high end electronics and any other high end jazz bass (and I have owned many, and still own a fancy nitro finish American made Fender with CS pickups).

Probably mentioned but buy a used Sterling by Music Man. Bought the oldest an SB4 for her 15th birthday. 200 shipped to my house. I find myself picking it up and playing it often. More than my Bongo (which I absolutely love).

I have a Squier Jaguar (34" scale) that I picked up used for $80. It's what I bring to the weekly open mic (I'm usually the house bass player) for others to use if they want. Plays and sounds great (after I did a set up). I'd use it for any gig with my band, but prefer my other basses.

I just picked up a mid 80s Roadstar II here off the classifieds. Very good bass for $200. Smokes all the Squiers I've had. But it's all personal taste, so YMMV.

Highly recommend Ibanez Talman series if you need new. Ibby necks suit me. May not be your thing so give them a try if you can. But, a TMB100 plus new strings and a pro setup will pretty much be a solid sutuon, IMO.

In the south of the continent we don't have a lot options, but the SX really are a good one if you are seeking for the best bang for the buck! They are good tools right of the bat, and a great platform por further modifications.
