They never go out of fashion, they’re like the little black dress of bass.

They did go out of fashion for a while in the 80s and into the early 90s. Not that they weren’t still being played, but not very visibly, with Steve Harris being an exception. Even Rocco had moved on to a more modern instrument. In the early 90s there was an article about Jeff Thunes in Bass Player magazine, and his preference for the Precision was considered to be kind of eccentric, and cool. Chris Wood of MMW got my attention around that time when he started using more P Bass than Hofner. And then when Pino reinvented himself as a P bass playing funkster behind D’Angelo, it was all over. The P Bass was back in style!

I might be off by about a decade. The famous Jeff Thunes interview was in 1997.
