upcoming NPD - CAL Grizzly

I was reading about these Grizzly Bass OD pedals and all the raving reviews. Google directed me to a used one at GC, and I was stricken with GAS. I held off the compulsion for a bit while I researched this particular smaller form factor model. I couldn't find any information about it, and the GAS compulsion won over when I caved and clicked "add to cart".

Anybody have any details on this smaller Grizzly pedal?

Where's the mid cut dial? the one I hardly ever use... if it's the same Grizzly maybe it needs less juice for the lightshow, that would be fine. Methinks it is a different beast.

I think it must be the same pedal with toggles in place of a couple of pots. CAL didn't have any other Grizzly on their website. I will email them to ask if no one here has a quick answer.

Pretty sure that's not a CAL Grizzly, nor is it smaller. A Grizzly is a 5 knob pedal, none of which could be replaced by a toggle. That pedal is quite a bit taller and thicker than a real Grizzly, but it's much narrower so it can't be a rehoused CAL Grizzly.

But as usual, I could be completely wrong!

I haven't received it yet, hence the "Upcoming" NPD. I might have broken some kind of TB rule with that, but once I do have it I report back on the sound. I'm also curious now and want to open it up, so I'll post a photo of that too.

Yeah man, from photos you'd think the Grizzly was a huge pedal, but it's this little tiny thing! I don't think it's even as "tall" (front to back) as an MXR pedal.

The Grizzly is, in fact, smaller than an MXR pedal. Wider, but shorter and thinner.

It is advertised as a Used Creation Audio Labs Grizzly, so if it is bogus and sub standard, I'll return it. -- replacing pots: I think you could replace any potentiometer, which is a variable resistor, with a toggle and either a pair of resistors at sweet spots or one resistor and a bypass circuit (zero resistance). Maybe even an internal trim pot so you would retain a range of resistor values.

Yes, a pot could be replaced with various resistor-switch combinations and/or an internal trimmer.

Gain would be a good example. Two resistors and a three way switch could let you have low, med and (no resistance) full gain. Depending on the switch you could change that no resistance to some if the circuit required it

Same could be done for EQ points, convert a tone-pot to bass, flat, & treble settings, or a two-way toggle of just bass / treble;
"optimising" the pedal for a "bass or guitar" switch by swapping out capacitors with the toggle...


It's my understanding that these are the Grizzly's controls?:

Nothing there that couldn't be replaced by a switch. 'Course, not many people would sub out a volume pot for a switch; just 'cause it can be done doesn't mean you should do it.

Mr EQ:

I'd change that last Mr EQ switch's frequency to 12ooKHz, and throw in a stomp switch — would make for a great instant slap-tone pedal, kinda like a CAL Funkulator.

When I said 'can't be replaced by a switch', I guess I should have really said 'shouldn't be replaced by a switch'. Yes it CAN be done, but why would you do it in this case? Why rehouse the pedal into a larger enclosure and make two of the controls fixed? This is why I say this is most likely not a Grizzly. I can't wait to see what it actually is if it's not!

I was, of course, joking around with all the crap in my previous post... but I meant the " just cuz can doesn't mean do", like you said.

I have no idea why, if it is a Grizzly, why they did it ... like RiffwRiter said, maybe they found the sweet spots for a couple of the controls — but which ones? Sorry, didn't look closely at the rehoused whatever-it-really-is, but the controls aren't labelled at all, from what I could see.

My guess would be scoop and hi-cut were made into switches.

Also I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but it does not say 'Grizzly' on it. It says 'GRZ'. I can't tell if the text wraps around the side to make a complete GRZZLY or what.

My CAL Holy Fire is the same size box as a EHX Bass Big Muff Pi (1590B?). The Holy Fire and the Grizzly should be the same size.

That, as others have said, is not a Grizzly. Curious to know what shows up.
