if you have been playing it a lot for a few months, get new strings for sure.
on a general basis, change them every few months or so.
especially if you notice dirt and rust buildup

lol ive been playing the same pair of strings for a year now....i think im a bit over due D: damn $$$
You may want to read past threads on strings - there are many schools of thought. Generally speaking, people change roundwounds much more often than flatwounds. There are a lot of flatwound players who never ever change strings - if they don't break, they stay on the bass.
Me, I don't change roundwounds either. My 2000 MIM Jazz nad the original rounds on it. But I have bought new basses with strings that sounded very tinny...and since I'm mostly a flats player, I usually replace them with Labella Deep Talkin' flats.
In the long run, you'll just have to try different strings...if you have friends who know what's on their bass, ask them to play the instrument a bit and pay attention to how the strings feel...both the surface and the tension.
