Upgrade question...

I apologize in advance for length - I should have been a novelist.

I'm currently running a crap-tastic hartke 3500 head into an ampeg SVT15E cab (ok, some people may like them, but I've given it a year or more, and its just not enough - tone is a big 'decent'). I've been busting my behind at work for the past couple of weeks (mucho O/T - it is nice) and am going to have around $1500-$2000 left after some minor car repairs. I'm thinking its time to upgrade my amp.

Ideally, I'd like to leave enough left over to pick up a decent used Geddy or other Jazz, just because its the one sound I think I'm missing (got a Bongo and a decent old Ibby Sr800, with a really smooth voice) - but this isn't super important, just a 'kinda wish I could'.

I'm playing Prog/Modern/Alt rock, some pop punk, a bit of finger funk, and a little old school (maiden-esque) metal. I'm not much for slapping (mostly because I suck at it), almost all fingerstyle - don't use a pick, and prefer a rounder/fuller sound, with enough mids and top end to cut through in the mix, and give some clarity, even with multiple strings ringing (a'la classical fingerstyle guitar). Band is LOUD (hard hitting drummer, geetar with a full stack, you know the drill).

What I've been considering is a 210 combo with enough oomph to drive the 15 as well - something like a used super readhead or GK 1001RB 2x10. My thought was that this would add the top end punch and clarity I'm seeking, while the 15 would maintain the fullness and rumble.

I am fond of tube warmth, and open to a head and 2x10 cab to add to my 15, but concerned about affording enough all tube power to keep up (the hartke was pushing pretty hard, and while it I know ratings differ between amps, it was rated as high as/higher than (in terms of wattage) a lot of the tube heads I could afford).

So, uh.... Help? Am I on the right track? Any combos that would fit the bill nicely? Heads and cabs I should really look at? Any and all advice is appreciated. :help:

Thanks!!

A friend of mine has been using an Eden Metro as his main rig and adds another cab when he needs more thump and output. Perhaps this might be a worthwhile consideration. Here's a link to the Eden website:

Good luck.

Check out the Traynor/Yorkville Sound 400 watt 2X10 combo. It will handle the 1X15 as an extension and give you a pretty big sound with the tone you want. Reliable and tough with a great warranty. You can't do much better for the price. I've used the Redhead. It's a good amp too but I'd prefer the Yorkville despite Yorkville's more humble reputation. Seems to have a lot more balls. The weight's about the same for either combo. The Traynor/Yorkville Sound is a lot less money.
