I'm never sure what the point of these sort of endeavors is.

It's the social media driving it IMHO.
Before social media it was the magazine advertisements.
I've seen more than a couple of times a person has just bought an instrument online & immediately wants to know about which pickups to put in, even though they haven't even tried the instrument yet.

I know a guy who just spend a wallet full of money on "upgrades" to a Mexican Fender that are kind of superfluous. All he did was change the finish of the hardware, but had to buy all new hardware to do it.

We should try and be happy with what we have and just play the dickens out of it, but somewhere along the way, GAS happens, and mods go hand in hand with GAS, IMHO.

I'm not knocking the OP. This is a phenomenon driven by forces some of us don't understand.
Upgrade what you feel is lacking. If it seems fine, then why upgrade?
You may actually regret having "upgraded".

If you're bored with the instruments, try different types of strings & a new setup.
