Uprgrading my current rig (Amp and cab setup) ampeg, darkglass, gk, mesa...?

Hello fellow bassmasters!

new guy on the TB. Been reading alot of the posts here but now wanted to sign up for a specific question about current amps on the market.

I currently carry Markbass little mark 3 which is powering up Eden 410xlt 4ohm cabinet. I absolutely love these things, especially the cab which I own. Markbass is pretty nice amp too and like the natural sound it produces. Nice platform to use different pedals etc is pretty versatile amp in my opinion.

The problem here may be I just have a GAS moment in my life but I would like to upgrade the current setup im using. Eden cab is fine at the moment and wont get rid of it (or so im thinking atm) but would like to get a bigger amp. I really dont care about tube amps and im pretty much interested in solid states but im open for suggestions. Ive been setting my eyes on Darkglass microtubes 900/new Alpha omega 900 and Mesa subway series d800/800+ because they can go 2 ohms and I could add another 4ohm cab if I needed in the future. Other amps which has caught my attention are Gk 1000rb and Ampeg svt7pro but those can only take the 4ohm load. And im bit scared about the issues people have stated about ampegs reliability but those things are pretty frickin cheap in Europe atm. Do you guys have any other brands and amps which can go 2ohm or are interesting?

Im satisfied with my Eden xlt and wasnt going to replace it anytime soon but have been intrigued to add 2x10 or 1x15 with it. What are your thoughts about using different brand cabs together? Eden has fine additions to my current rig but all shops sell 8ohm cabinets so it makes it hard to same impedance Eden cab.

Music I mainly play with my bands are aggressive metal and the other project has pop/rock/progressive vibe in it. When practicing I play pretty much any genre in the market. Im not searching any specific tone and like the amp to be versatile but it isnt really an issue for me if the amp has its own distinct tone like gk has for example. I would like to state my problem really is that I like all those amps in a way but cant really test any of those because there are no stores in my region which would carry other things than Marshall/fender.

edit. I have darkglass b7k and microtubes x7 so would the microrubes 900 go for waste from the tubes part? I could just sell the other pedal if i get the amp but not sure about that.. Also about the usage of the amps and stuff: I practice with interface or just with the bass so Im just needing the amp and cab for playing in gigs and band practice.

I have a mesa d-800 and it is a solid piece of gear. I've also had the ampeg svt pro7 and it was great when it worked and when it broke the repair would have cost a lot. If I were you I would consider getting a nicer cab, maybe with neo speakers. Cabs make a massive difference.

Need to check Mesa out then! Would love to test out first but cant find a store which has them stored.. Been thinking to switch my whole rig so maybe I should take a vacation to Sweden. They got so much better stock in their stores. Im starting to get fed up with my XLT cab which had 1 blown speaker. Just got a replacement ordered and noticed that two older ones which I havent replaced after i bought it have already some crease on them..

I would suggest the Ampeg all tube 100 watts V-4B head.
It can handle, 2, 4 and 8 ohms and is very loud with the right cab.
And sounds very very very good in my experience.

I like my LMIII. If I were to improve on it, I'd add a different preamp or some pedals I have lying around. As is, it works. I use it as a backup or for quick grab and go scenarios. My primary is a Mesa D800+ that I like a little more. The HPF allows me to roll off the super lows that don't benefit my sound but draw power away. It also has a sweet warranty and then we also have active Mesa employees here who are very helpful and knowledgeable that I factored heavily into my Mesa commitment. I bought the LMIII after the D800+ but I haven't found any reason to knock it and it's loud as I'll ever need.

The LMIII is great overall and pretty loud. Ive been adding few preamps and pedals with it and works just fine. I guess the cab is my only real problem since I cant hear myself properly in a band rehearsals. Need more clarity and Eden xlt sound a bit too boomy when playing loud.

which kind of rigs you guys play through cabwise?

Get yourself a GK and save yourself the disappointment most people suffer by going down most of those roads you’re already considering. I have used GK since the 20th century. I spent a year with the Mesa D-800+. I gave up and went back. Now I have my punch and growl back. If you want rock and roll you want GK.

I’m personally using the MB-800 fusion. I have the MB-500(non fusion) as my backup. The fusion model has a tube pre amp. But the MB-500 has surprisingly great tone. With punch and presence.

But the rb series is no slouch. Power and punch. But much heavier. I’ve compared the MB series to the RB series and to me they are so close you can’t go wrong either way. It’s all in your budget.

Plus GK is rolling out new models in the next few months. They look awesome but I’m waiting a year. Let the work out the bugs(if there is any).

To summarize don’t get caught up in hype. GK is tried and true.

Absolutely. I have a pair of 800 watt 410’s. I can use them independently or together. Both are 8 ohm. The MB-500 will output 350 watts into 8 ohms and will easily climb past 600 at 4 ohm. My MB-800 fusion will output 560 watts at 8 ohms and climb to well over 1k watts. I never need that much power, but oh dang do I ever have clean headroom.

By the way don't get caught up in all that HPF BS.

Contour and presence controls do a much better job at taming errand frequencies. And the ones offered in the units that are most popular here are set to the wrong frequencies.

HPF's are for the studio. Not live performance.
