Eerbrev, that sounds like a really awesome bass. Mine is similarly set up for classical playing. If you're ever passing through Chicago, it would be fun to compare Brescians.

I really like the removable neck concept. I saw one in action when I picked up mine (which is still my favorite).
It will have a removable neck! way better for travel, and the adjustable string height's a great plus.
I stopped by the Upton shop this week while driving thru the area. Beautiful workshop!
So I got to play a hybrid Bohemian. This thing really jumps! So alive, responsive and toneful.
And I have to say that the Brescian is simply the most beautiful bass I have ever seen. Period.

I got my db! It took a while, (no fault of Upton's. I was out of town and Upton was kind enough to delay shipping my bass until I came back) but it's now in my hands. Initial response: I like it! It's definitely a db I can grow into, and maybe in five years or so, I'll upgrade to a fully carved round back. But for now, this is the perfect bass for me!
Special thanks to LouisF. He was kind enough to give me my first db lesson (and offered to do it free of charge!) and let me play his Upton Karr and Neolson 5 string.
I've noticed that the talkbass community is special and very welcoming of newcomers. Hopefully I can pay it forward to others in the future.

Thanks, guys. Both LouisF and Upton have been great. Louis, your lesson was definitely very helpful. Hardest part of learning a new instrument for me is getting the proper technique down, and your lesson helped me go down the right path.
I've been renting for about a year and with rental costs being about $100 a month, it made more sense for me to buy. The way I see it, the bass pays for itself in three years.
Now back to practicing.

I bought an Upton for my first DB as well. Had a rental, but had found a place that rented instruments to school students, and it was a flat rate of $375 for a year. But still the bass was awful. One day as I was pullin the bass out of the car to go in for my lesson, I heard a loud pop, the tailpiece cable had snapped and the bridge collapsed on the rental.
My instructors working bass was one of Arnold Schnitzer's prototypes of the New Standard Cleveland, so he let me use that for the lesson that night. It was a revelation and I redoubled my efforts that I should get a good instrument of my own. A couple months later I had found my upton used from another TB'er.

Just want to thank Josh, Gary and guys at Upton for the wonderful setup they do. I just purchased a used (6 month old) Upton-Shen SB88, and this thing rocks! Beautiful to look at, but the best part is the way it plays: like butter! I visited their barn last July, and playing a Bohemian there was such as eye-opener, that I knew I wanted a bass from them. Seems a used Bohemian or Standard is basically unobtainium. It took a while, but I'm glad I fould one, even if it is a Shen.
Christmas comes early. Set up for my new standard is scheduled for 12/16. Very psyched. I saw the unfinished body a couple weeks ago and can't wait.

I picked up my new Bass on the way home from school in Ohio, dropping off my old bass (Known as "Rose", for its rosewood back stripe) as part of the trade-in deal. After a few minor tweaks in the bridge, I was off to the races with my bouncing new baby bass.
Well, I say "baby", but I need to invest in a new case because my old case doesn't really fit!!!!
Cool features:
- you can't see it (due to the pictures being taken with a potato), but on the top and bottom of the back seam there is a rosewood triangle, as well as a rosewood end cap to the neck. This all came from the same rosewood board that made the back stripe on Rose. That was a great added touch that Eric, Gary and the other folks added.

- Five string glory.
- Rabbath endpin "attachment". instead of drilling a large hole, there's an added block that is easily removable that the rabbath endpin press fits into.
