Upton does carved round backs on all of their carved basses ... it just costs more money. Read the detailed descriptions.
Holy crap, man, that thing is beautiful with a capital "BEAUTIF!" So did you go hybrid or solid wood? I imagine if it's a custom it's solid, eh?
I wish solid wood. No, I went hybrid for several reasons:
- I live in Toronto where the weather/humidity swings harder than Count Basie and while I have a humidifier/dehumidifier in my apartment, it's an old place that's quite warm year round
- I'm nowhere near the playing level to need a solid wood instrument, and, for gigging, I think the hybrid probably has a bit more "peace of mind" in terms of temperament and strength
- I'm not a rich man. This was an indulgence that I wanted to "Treat yo' self" but definitely would have been a stretch for the full solid (I'm from Canada and our dollar is darn weak now so a full solid would have been 10k plus). I still had to also consider I need to buy an amp/head and my other bass stuff also factored into the equation. I wish I was rich to afford ALL THE THINGS! haha.
For anyone who might be interested in the bass back shape question, I will follow-up with the email response I got from Upton (I’m pretty sure Eric wouldn’t mind the quote here):
“The laminated flatbacks are just a great way to creep the bass closer to a solid wood bass' tone. The internal bracing on a hyb is the same as a solid wood flatback...so you get a lot of the flat back plusses without the negatives.”
The backs of Standards are round because in the laminate it is a labor/material saver, which is the inverse of carved basses.
My 7/8 Laminated Bohemian Flatback should be 'in the white' in the next month or so.

So dumb-a question: Are the Bohemian models any less-popular these days, and the Brescian is the next best thing? Or aren't there any Jazz guys alive anymore?

Cool. I am SO close to pulling the string on a Bohock model with deluxe top. But I like my lights on too...

I originally was on the waitlist for a standard, I then switched my order to a hybrid, and then it was suggested by Brian over at Upton that the Brescian with deluxe top was the way to go if I wanted a hybrid. He convinced me to go higher and I’m very glad I did.

Basses should be kept on their side. Even for a minute.
Very expensive lesson learned.
Now The bass is fully insured, and Eric has been super supportive and is going to take care of me. I will get a whole new neck. Not a repair. I get to crate her up and send back to Mystic.
Don’t do what I did.

Nice of Eric to slap a new neck on it, though. I'm still going to use my stand. Never fell out before, doubt it will in the future. It's a good stand.
