USA Peavey Fury 5 String Question

I'm going to be looking at a Peavey Fury 5 String made in the US this week. It's black w/2 pups. The seller was at work when I called, so I can't get the serial # until tomorrow.

Anyhow, is there a site that lists the Peaveys made in the US so I can id the year ?

Also, any info on these basses would be appreciated. He said it's all original w/ohsc. 175.00 Are there any issues with these basses ? Pros/cons ?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure you are going to look at an import Peavey Fury with an active preamp. Nice bass at the price you are paying -- it's shaped like the Millenniums. Search for Fury 5 strings here for more info.

Maybe the seller is calling the two pups the two parts of the P pickup? It still could very well be a USA Fury.

The USA Peaveys are great basses. Better than the imports, IMO.

Well, the seller said it was a Fury, but it turns out it's a Foundation.
I bought it anyway since it was in great shape and had a new set of D'Addario rounds on it.

Sorry, but that's what he told me at first. Seems he had it in the shop to get the pots replaced and new strings when he listed it.

Anyhow, thanks for your replies.

Now I have to figure out when it was made. It's a USA model, but according to the wiki serial # list it's an '81. He said he bought it new in '91.

I'll search "peavey foundation" here and see if I can find out anything before I post pics and a new thread.

Email them at Peavey and send them your serial number. They'll email you back the date it was made and info about it. That's what I did with my Foundation. Post a pic of it and maybe we can help you figure out some more about it from the looks of it. An '81 will look different than a '91. Peavey Foundations are nice basses. Better than the Fury, btw.

Thanks for the email suggestion. I'll do that :bassist:

I'm not really worried about the exact date right now, but more interested in what type pups and body wood. It's in great shape. Neck is fine, no twist, frets have minimal wear. No fret buzz to be found. Only one ding on the body and none anywhere else. Sounds fine, but I won't know for sure till I put flats on it. The seller said the pots and knobs were replaced by a shop. Said the reason he had them changed was because they were "loose", whatever that means.

Yes, those are Super Ferrites. They kind of changed the design a bit before they stopped using them. It's definitely a 90's Foundation from the headstock. Foundation 5's are hard to find with the Super Ferrites. You got a good deal there.

Ok, cool. Thanks man. Actually, I didn't know it was a Foundation until I called him before I walked out the door to meet up for the sale. So all along, I'm searching for Fury specs and stuff lol. I took a capo and tuner with me. Checked for fret buzz and found none, threw the capo on and checked the relief. No issues, so I grabbed it.

The volume pots are pretty smooth up toward the max, but they both "jump" a bit much mid-way between 3/4 and full on. Don't know if it's common on these, or if the shop the seller took it to changed something

Can't wait to get some flats on it.

The jump in the pots must be normal because mine does the same thing. Congrats on a great bass. I went to the hardware store and changed all the rusty screws on mine. Almost all the hardware was pretty rusty. It looks a lot better.

Ok, actually it's not that much of an annoyance now that I'm used to it. The more I play it, the more I'm pleased with it. I found that both pup volume pots all the way up have a pretty decent tone, and since the boost is near max travel of the pot, I've found that it just takes a slight roll back of either vol pot to get a drastic change in tone. So with both full up, there is one distinct tone, and rolling back the neck pup vol, the drop gives another distinct tone. Same with the bridge pot. So it's sort of like 3 presets if you will at the tweak of one knob. or, 2 if going from bridge dominant to neck dominant or vice versa. Cool.

Is yours like mine ? A 90's 5 w/ferrites ? If so, what strings you like on it ?

Reason I ask, is that First Quality here in town has killer prices on strings, but when I checked online before I drove out there, they were out of stock on all flatwound 5 sets.

So after playing it with the rounds, I'm considering sticking with rounds on the Peavey. I've got flats on the Lakland anyway. I'm really starting to love the peavey. It sounds great with rounds, and the neck on it feels fantastic.

It growls like crazy too.

Mine is a 4 string 1990 model. I like rounds on my bass. I have some MTD strings on it now, but I had some DR H-Beams on it a while back. Those were a bit much for that bass. The MTD's seem pretty nice and give a rounder tone. Oh on strings, check The Perfect Bass. I just got an email from them about their string sale. Put "stringsplus" in the coupon code box at check out. I'm not sure if that's any better than our Talkbass discount but I thought I'd check it out.

Yep, definitely a 90's, and those are shaped like Super Ferrites, even though they don't have the wording on them.

I prefer the Super Ferrites to the pickups that they replaced them with a year or two after your bass was made. It is extremely rare to see a Foundation 5 with the Super Ferrites.
