USACG body finishing

Ok, so things are not going well. The finish has some problems and I am ready to punt so here goes.
I've sanded off the finish and am finishing with watco danish oil.

It's not that bad, it just takes doing it a few times to perfect your technique. Ash is not the easiest wood out there to finish with lacquer though.

You're right it's not that bad. The most difficult part is keeping the finish free of debris. It looks like i am going to have to fabricate a paint booth with filtered air.

What? I got back from WalMart with a bottle of purple Rit Dye and see this! So I have decided to try something different. Instead of mixing the purple dye with water I mixed a small amount of dye with a small amount of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil, one of my favorite finishes to use. Wasn't even sure I could get them to mix well enough for the dye to tint the Tru-Oil but it worked! I just made my first test on a scrap piece of wood and it looks good. I'm going to do a few more coats and see how it looks. Hopefully this will be the way to go as I find Tru-Oil very easy to work with and it won't require any gloss coat since the Tru-Oil gives a glossy finish.

Fret not, I can share everything I learned with the dye. I did try to mix the rit with my water based clear. It did not mix for me. The clear coat, for me, was a pain. I could not keep it clean. I could never get a finish coat that was clean so i kept sanding it back.
I have had great luck with danish oil on mahogany and water based clear. I finished a hand made guitar that way and it looks phenomenal. I'd be interested to see how the truoil works out. I have pondered that.

So here is two coats dark walnut danish oil and 4 coats regular danish oil (non tinted). It is starting to build a gloss. I did sand in the oil for the first two coats to build a slurry

Have to be honest- I liked the blue stain, liked the burst a lot less, but this is good.

Also curious re: dye and Tru-Oil.

which pickups are you going with? you should consider a set of cream covers . . .

Bought a set of dimarzio dp123's. Covers might be the way to go. Will finish the clear on the next low humidity day. Pics will follow. Neck should be here tmro

YESSS! those are my favorite j pickups! they also come in cream!

you should call dimarzio and see if they will send you covers for like $10 . . .

Ok, I'm almost done so let's get caught up.
I've shielded the cavities with foil in addition to the paint.

Sprayed my last coat of clear.

and my neck showed up.

I did 5 coats of tru oil on the neck. I bought an 8 ounce bottle so I should be able to do about 6590 more necks. After the neck was dry, I dropped in the tuners and bolted it on. The sad part is I didn't order strings so I am missing the E. Doh!
