Yeah, I know what you mean, most programs are requiring more real estate to run compared to their older counterparts. DAW's are kind of unique, though. You can certainly tax a computer hard by using the newer features! Elastic audio style things or super in depth editing with thousands of regions. Not to mention some of the newer plug ins.
But the great thing is that they are all dormant until you turn them on of course, with the basic I/O processes taking very little system power. No doubt theres a fair few extra things going on behind the scenes these days but it doesn't seem to have effected cpu overhead that much. Thankfully, they have kept the fundamentals very simple, allowing for more stability and freeing up the CPU to take on the more taxing modern tasks found in editing and mixing!
