I want to simply plug my bass into the Mic input (with 1/4" to 1/8" adapter, of course) on my laptop (built-in soundcard) and then start up iTunes, plug headphones into my phones-out jack on the computer and be able to mix the 2 so I can play along with the music, hearing both in my phones.

Does anyone know of any way to do this. I have tried everything and can't figure it out. It seems like such a simple thing.

I am running VistaHomePrem. Any ideas???

That should work. Make sure you go to your recording control and select "Stereo Mix" or "Mono Mix" or "What U Hear" type of option.

To get there, double click the volume icon in your taskbar, hit Options, click the Recording radio button, and hit Ok.

I have Vista. You must be thinking about XP.

    Thanks
