Use the Old Bass?

Sorry i should have clarified! My flight case takes two separate keys to open and My band name is emblazoned in big lettering on front and back. No way they could have put another bass in it. Or mistakenly thought it was his. He wanted it because of what was inside. I am not trying to sound tough. I am just saying their are thieves that need to be tought a lesson rather than spend one night in the county lockup.

Short story: A dude who was connected with the guy our band rented a warehouse space from stole our big Peavey mixing board. We lost a lot of other stuff too, including our drummer's cymbals (they left his crappy shells though). But the mixer- that was the star of our little show, for gear.
We went to a gig of theirs and lo and behold, our mixer was FOH, being attended by the guy who stole it (talk about dumb). We all five of us walked up during a set and stood around him, standing very close. We all shared the same air. It was uncomfortable. He kept it together, but the jig was up. We waited there, until the end of the set... you could almost see sweat breaking out on his forehead.
We left at the end of the set with the board. The point had been driven home, in front of all present, and he had been marked as a thief. We got the board back, he was through as a local scene participant (by and large, for a while anyway), and we ended up looking clean as a whistle and strong as a big oak. No violence to tarnish us.

Now, I can dig where you're coming from, Gargoil, and good on you for nailing it. But if you move your game up a notch you'll eventually see a benefit from it. To be able to walk away with clean hands is better than to get down into the same mud-puddle as the scum-bag trying to steal from you. Why elevate him? He doesn't deserve that much attention or credit! Keep the standard high and someone will notice.

Good story!
I answered an add for songwriters and went to a guys house and played my tunes and he played his. He actually had an album out on his own indy label. He had microphones hidden in his heater ducts just behind the vents. He ripped off a song of mine. I never figured out how to get it back! I just let it go...... he never did anything worthwhile in music anyway. That's Kharma for you. It all comes back on you eventually.

Right there about the Karma. Still a rough row though, sorry about it! I don't break out tunes anymore unless they're copyrighted and I have them on media, in a posted-to-myself envelope. Unless the people I'm working with are friends.

Holy crap! That's like something out of the movies...mic's in the vents, really??? WOW.

You shoulda kicked his *** in at least

Yeh the guy was wierd. He wanted me to play bass on a TV show were he was interviewed and then was to play a song. I practiced the song of his( before I knew he got mine) and the day came for the show so ---I go down to the studio and carry in my stuff and set it up etc. He does the interview while me and a couple other guys wait for the song performance. We get ready to go and right before they start he comes over and says he has another bass player that he wants to do the song!! So that's how it went. The other guy used my amp and I stood off in the shadows. I was pretty upset at the time. I felt like punching the guy but didn't. Then later when I found out he ripped my song I would have punched him but he wouldn't let me in his house. Oh yeh-- when I went to his house to punch him he came to the door and looked out the window. He was dressed in a womens sweater and had makeup on. His hair was all done up like a chicks. I think I called him Debra or something and left. I just let it go after that.

Who knew Charles Bukowski was on TB?

A 60 Fender P ?! Wow I'd have that sucker in one of those cabinets with climate control ! I wish. That's a heck of alot different than using a 72 Jazz. I guess I should just go for it and use it all the time. It ain't real pretty-- well to me it is but not to anyone who doesn't know squat. There's wear and tear and finish rubbed off from the case, from hands, fingers. There's checking all over it (sweet) and the headstock is almost brown from yellowing. The action is great, it's light, it's got black blocks, and it sounds really good. The case blows though. A clasp tap is missing. I use a newer form fit case. Then there's my 74 P bass.............................

I play my 59 at my cover gig every now and then. I'm not crazy with it and don't fling it around my back like Billy Sheehan or anything. I've never had a problem.

Um...YET!

I do believe in playing basses rather than watching them in glass cases... but hey I've seen a lot of gear "vaporize" in the kind of places I play. It's why I bought all the SX basses. Yes, I'll play the good ones too but I try to restrict those to places where gear is less prone to disappear. I mean, having to keep one eye on your bass when taking a break or being paranoid about a trip to the men's room takes the fun out of things.

And thieves DO know the value of things and can be long gone in a flash. Even worse are the amateurs who don't know the value of things like the clowns who trash a $20,000 air conditioner to grab $35 worth of copper! Often they are so dumb that they get caught and you get the instrument back, but once you've seen what they did to your baby, you wish you never got it back!

I say playing a valuable instrument is great but you have to treat it like it's valuable. I mean, does a club owner just let a bundle of $20s laying on the bar until he gets around to putting them away? Same has to go for your valuables.

i used to fly with the 79 precision i used to own. wasn't very pristine, though. hey, stuff's made to be played. as soon as i can get my 76 precision back working again, i'm going to gig it. might not fly with it, though. we'll see.

What's the point of even having if if not to be played?

My dad already retrieved this bass once at gun point ('round 1970). I would have no problem doing the same. In Texas, you can still shoot people for theft of property. :)

Yeh- that's what I call NICE. I'd love to have an old old bass like that. I kind of like the idea about the theft of property thing. I just can't stand thieves. I had my tools stolen from my pickup truck one time. There's nothing lower than stealing a mans tools. Stealing his guitar is like the same. Pretty darn low to the ground IMO.

I had my tool belt stolen once, out of my car. Getting pretty personal there... and what was the guy going to do, go get a job? :D
