I prefer to buy used if I can, and normally I have no problem and I'm able to be patient. Then there are those other times; times where the GAS pains become unbearable. That's when my new instrument purchases usually happen. I'm weak, I admit it!

Both of my Ibanezes are used, and I got them ridiculously cheap (Each under $190 shipped with a HSC). Gotta love how Ibanez's resale value are ridiculously low to start with. 
I bought my first bass (Fender p/j deluxe thing) used and had no problems with it. I liked the battle scars it had. My next bass was a brand new stingray. While I like having a new instrument thats all mine, Im forever babying it. A few scratches and dings look great on a used instrument, but one decent scratch on a spotless instrument looks nasty 
I have since purchased a used Warwick Thumb. My main reason for buying used this time round was purely based on the money I was saving! In australia, a Thumb is worth about $4000 AUD. Very pricey. My used Thumb (that I found on TB) cost me about $1600 AUD. That includes the bass, hardcase, wax, shipping and insurance (the bass is from america).
To cut a long story short, buying used is great! I now own a dream bass that I wouldn't have owned if I had to buy it new. The international, used market is definately something other non US residents should check out before buying their next instrument. The only drawback being that you can't test that specific instrument before you buy. I figure, if I don't like it like i do the other Thumbs I have played, then I will sell it locally for $2500 AUD and make money anyway
