I've recently started working at a pedal company called Source Audio to help them launch a line of bass effects. They sent me out to Bass Player Live '09 (which was sick!) to demo their new [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and their Hot-Hand.

What are your thoughts on the uses for this effect? Do you like the visual aspect of it or would that cramp your style?

The visuals are the only part that suck beans. I would not want a big fairy princess lightup ring on while I play, and I would not want to wave my headstock up and down to the beat. Looks dorky.

The concept is great though!

I'd love to fool around with one for sure! The visual element works for me. I like that it makes you a bit more involved and theatrical in your playing. The big bright ring doesn't bother me that much, and I'm sure later designs could find an appearance more accommodating to others.

I've got the tri-mod phaser, and to be honest I don't use the hot hand too much, on bass it takes too much movement to get a noticeable sweep out of it, more than i get from normal playing, at least for me. Works great on guitar though, and the aesthetics don't bother me, in fact i think the blue light looks pretty cool

Digging both of them. The Hot Hand might be overkill for me, but I like it, and a distortion with that much versatility would be cool. I don't know that I'll be able to afford it, though...it looks extremely deluxe, and pedals like that are usually expensive.

I've seen the hot hand used several times in a live setting. I think it's more novelty than anything else. It sounds cool, but it's really not anything different. Also waving your hand over the strings, or whatever you have to do for the effect looks funny. Not to mention, if you're waving your hand over the strings, you can't also be plucking those strings.

If you're looking for ooohs and aaahs, fancy lights and waving hands could attract some attention, but as far as a great sounding effect......meh.

I got the Hot Hand wah several years ago.

I like the ability to get very subtle shifts that I over shoot with a regular wah.
I play finger style and have the sensitivity adjusted so that just a slight rotation of my hand will work the effect, but regular playing doesn’t. So no dramatic movements

Of course with a bit of tweaking you can make every thing sound like “Shaft” or have a very long drawn out waaaaaaah as an accent.

Do love the volume swells and reverse wah feature.
I also like that it can be used in place of an expression pedal for other effects.
It would be interesting with phase, flange or a Bass Murf.

Only problem I have is you can’t do the stuck wah in one position and you can only set 4 programs. I have my 4 favorites, but a couple of more would be nice.

I don’t have the remote yet so I’m hard wired into it. No big deal, I don’t run around like I have weasels in my pants.


Still waiting for the Multi Wave distortion.
