Using 4-4" 4 Ohm Car Speakers In a Biamp Bass Rig?

OK....here goes....So I just bought a Carvin Pro Bass 500 for $120 on CL. It has 2-250 watt @ 4ohm power amps controlled by a crossover that goes to 1,000 Hz. I own an Eminence Neo 15" woofer that I used to use in a Fender Rumble and it sounded WAY BETTER than the stock speaker. Anyway...here is my hairbrained scheme:

1) get a decent 15" unloaded cab off of Craigslist and load the Neo into it.
2)Buy 2 pairs of 4" car speakers,wire them to 4 Ohm series/parallel and build a box that is the same width as the 15" cab.

I can get all 4 of the car speakers for about $50. Is this crazy? Describe why or why I should not do this....I'm thinking my calculations are pretty sound...I have no idea what it will sound like. Has anyone attempted this type of a project? Any and all opinions, thoughts, advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!!

As an experiment you can give it a try but you shouldn't expect to much from it.
Since the amp has an active crossover(as far as I understand your story) you could(and should) set the x-over point somewhere between 800-1000hz so the 4" drivers don't get any low/mid frequencies. In this case the four cardrivers will (sort of)act as a poorman's 8"PA mid.
To get most out of the four drivers you should place 'm vertically as one would in a line-array, improving horizontal dispersion, this will be an advantage over a single 6" or 8" mid. Btw. if the 4" drivers have tweeters you should disconnect them, they will get fried instantly with the first pluck on your bassguitar.

I started of with these kind of experiments(using small fullrange drivers) and it may result in something rather cool.

You can get a single Emi. Alpha 6 and make a little sealed topbox for it for the same price. Nice, smooth live sound mid there that still has a natural ~5khz rolloff, works well with dirt pedals, etc.


BTW, nice amp. I used to have one years ago, wish I still had it.

Personally I wouldn't even bother to try. I've been there and tried that. The very low efficiency doesn't make for a decent midrange and the tweeter also have lower efficiency to match up with the woofer cone. I'd buy dedicated midrange drivers and go with them. You could then forget the tweeters entirely.
