Hey guys hope this is the right place to post this, but this is probably going to be a loaded question so I apologize. Anyway, I have been really intrigued by several videos I have seen of people using basses to control midi with one of the hexaphonic pickups run through a midi interface like a GI-20. I have been trying to find out more about all that is involved in giving a bass the capability to be used as a midi controller but it seems I find so much information I just get confused more.
From what I have seen, this technology hasn't really been perfected for bass yet in that there is a large amount of latency between playing and the midi note being triggered when playing in the lower register and that the tracking is spotty at best in the bass range. I had always wanted to play around with a piccolo bass and so I got to wondering: Could I use a piccolo bass for doing synth work with something like the Roland GK-3B running through a Roland GI-20? If it is possible to use a piccolo bass would this help with latency issues? And what is the best system you guys would recommend in terms of tracking accuracy and lowest possible latency. I have heard good things about the graphtech system in guitars but am unsure of the quality with bass. I have also seen much of the Roland external hexaphonic pickups as well as RMC pickups. As far as I can tell it comes down to piezo setups or magnetic pickups like the Roland. Finally, would the Roland GI-20 be able to be connected to a computer and run through a program like Ableton Live?
Again, I apologize for the long winded question and my wording is probably a bit convoluted but if anyone has experience with using these piezo or hexaphonic setups on a bass to trigger midi I would be greatly interested in your experiences and your recommendations for which system is best! Thank you!
