using a jazz bass for punk rock

Hi Mantis



I did (well a long looong time ago ) the sound was as punk as punk can be

I used a pic and a lot of gain on my amp

but I never did the real test....



The answer here is: No!!! The white ones (your P is white) don' t do the job (fail the test)

My P is sonic blue (but looks white in pics) and my jazz is white .... I will probably bring my jazz to band practice and see how it goes ... the Rick works really great IMHO

Solo'd neck pickup on a Jazz is a pretty good punk tone. Buy one of those old Peavey Mk III amps and the accompanying 2 ohm 215 cab, and you will have a pretty stellar punk rig.

Punk is a bit about who will blink first, though I find some of the punk ethos contradictory and confusing. I think that as long as you totally own the gig/situation/tone/whatever then you can use whatever bass you like.

Does the name "Jazz Bass" imply that this bass was meant for jazz only? I don't think so, but I admit that in 1978, when playing in a punk/new wave band with my Jazz Bass, that name on the headstock was a bit embarrassing at first!
I swapped that bass (a 1973 model) for a Rickenbacker 4001 that seemed more suitable, but again and again I came back to Jazz basses

David Wm Sims uses a J type bass. Not really like some of the other punk bands listed but they are in that same vein IMO.

JJ and Hugh were goofing around for TOP of the Pops and not playing their own instruments on stage...as they were miming anyway

Bryan IMHO has one of the best classic sounds in punk.

its amazing how a genre about breaking all the rules has so many rules.

but i guess thats also why i dont consider there to much real punk after 1978

I've been playing punk bass for 30 years and I can say that a Jazz bass is one of the top 3 basses for punk. P bass, Jazz bass, and a three way tie between a Ric, Tbird, and Stingray are IMO, the best basses for punk.
But all in all Punk is just rock anyways.

I like this thread, but I will say that we all know that "there are no rules in punk", smash the system, splash the cistern etc



along with "best bass for metal jokes", can we just assume that the poster is asking about the SOUND OF THE BASS, and probably whether it will work well in a lively band with distorted guitars and loud drumming – not a lecture on true punk ethics. (I happen to agree, but whatever )

oh and remember what Iggy Pop said:
