Using a preamp and band EQ together

So i have a mxr bass preamp pedal (the small green one) that i have been using for a few months and its fantastic very clean and transparent preamp. The thing im wondering is whats the best way to utilise the pedal with my traces 7 band eq? Should rely in my preamp for tone shaping and my band EQ for purely boosting and cutting frequencies? Advice is welcome :)

A preamp should not be transparent, that would mean it does nothing.

It depends on what you meed, if you have two different tones you use in a gig, set the amp's eq for one tone and the preamp for the other.

Your method also works,ie set amp eq for the room.

Yes transparent was the wrong word! :)

Would setting the preamp for one tone and the EQ for another and then blending the two clash too much?

Any electronic device in the signal chain, unless it is a specific effect (synth, distortion, delay, etc.), should be transparent. They should add no coloration to the sound. A preamp should amplify the signal and that' s it (in the ideal world). Even an eq should be transparent with everything flat. So, you were correct in your terminology.

"Should" is irrelevant. All that matters is what sounds good to you.

Your preamp and pedal EQs will almost certainly focus on different frequencies, so you just need to find out which combination of settings works best for you. For myself, I would turn the EQ off first and then manipulate the EQ on the preamp to find the settings that sound best to you. Then, if desired, kick on the pedal and adjust any frequences that you aren't happy with from the preamp EQ settings. For example, I get most of my EQ shaping from my preamp, but I have considered adding a separate EQ settings to tame some extra high frequencies from one of my basses -- and I'll sometimes use my basses' onboard preamps to make slight adjustments. But that is just me; one of the guitarists in my band has an MXR 10-Band EQ pedal that is always set to the same combination of EQ adjustments that he likes (with the pedal taped over to keep the sliders from moving), and so he makes any ongoing EQ adjustments through his amp or overdrive pedal.

Graphics are usually used to eq system problem areas. So, you would use it to eq the amp/cabinet combo for either a flat response or a response to your liking. Then you would use the preamp EQ for specific room or instrument problems. At least this is usually how it is done for rack mount equipment. With pedals people use them all sorts of different ways.
