Using guitar pedals for bass?

I have a Boss Overdrive/Distortion for my electric guitar rig that sounds really sick with my bass. Is it ok to use guitar pedals for bass? Overall, I haven't been impressed with the bass overdrives that I've tried and I've tried several. I tried my guitar pedal on a whim and was pretty satisfied with the range of sounds I could get.
