The distortion on that sound sample is modeled after the boss mt-2 metal zone and it's played through and ampeg svt model. the distortion level is at 25%. I started a thread on patch ideas on the zoom b3 and the sound sample I posted is one of the patch ideas I came up with. here's the link.

Modern bass distortion

Section 1: m comp: thresh:24, ratio:9, level:70, attack:5

No low end loss here. I use certain guitar pedals. No patches. Just a buffer at the beginning and end of my signal chain.

If you like the sound of a rat. Get a fuzzrocious rat tail.
If you like a green Russian muff (very Krist Novaselic) get a Sanford and sonny Bluebeard muff or swollen pickle or pickle pie b.
clean blend fuzz... El oso.

Just realizing as I type this that out of the 9 pedals currently on my board only one is technically a "bass" pedal (Meatbox) I experience no low end loss, but I do wonder if I'm losing a little articulation. I think that's probably more a symptom of a long chain than bass/guitar pedals tho
I need an Xblender lol

F*** an xblender. Get two this1smyne $30 buffers. Put one at the front and one at the end of your signal chain. Pesto. No high end/articulation loss. I spent a lot of time and money trying to stop signal degradation going through my board. Tried all kinds of loopers and blenders before I drank the Pete Cornish kool-aid.

Building your own cables and keeping them as short as possible goes a long way as well.

Note that distorted bass doesn't necessary NEED to retain all of the original low end. Yes, it can be shocking to hear the mega fat low end disappear or lessen when you're soloing in your bedroom. But in a band / mix context it's usually fine.

Same goes with unison volume with bass distortion. Set your clean vs dirt at unison at home, and you'll typically find you're lost in the mix in the band room. Give it an output boost to help cut through.

As long as it all sounds good in the mix, that's what counts. :)

Sooooo true

Used my brand new fuzz for the first time on stage last night, was set at "unity" level thru my amp in my own practice time, but was immediately lost when I kicked it on at soundcheck thru the house with a full band. It's now set at what would be an ear-splitting level should I kick it on by myself thru my amp, but it's perfect thru the PA in the band mix. The physics of sound are weird lol!! My bad for bringing a pedal I hadn't gotten to know 100% yet.

I've said it before I'll say it again. You gotta REALLY know your pedals and what they do and how they'll sound. Otherwise ur just kickin stuff around. Sometimes I have to remind myself!

I used to have issues using guitar style pedals but with all of the blender pedals available I can use what ever has the sound I want and blend back in clean bass to avoid the low suck of some pedals.
I have a Boss LS-2 in my trick bag and use a RockTron Tru-Loop on my pedal board.

low end loss? depends on the pedal. you can always get an fx loop with a wet/dry blend like the barge concepts one i just sold at a pittance. this allows you to dial in the top without sacrificing bottom. that pedal also does all types of other ill sh*t.

I use a ton of "guitar" pedals on bass. The only time you can really ever run into any real issue is on hi-gain distortion and fuzz. Even most overdrive pedals won't really cut your bass to any appreciable amount. However, some overdrives (especially the tubescreamer variants) boost your mids a lot, and some people seem to interpret a mid boost as a bass cut, even though it really isn't.

I've been considering that ratatak pedal.
from there website you can even buy a kit for $40. comes with everything but the enclosure.

I had been thinking about the byoc mouse/rat clone.

Anyone with experience with either of these pedals, I
haven't been able to find any word on the ratatak.
