Using same station locker for decades?

At the beginning of the movie "Once Upon a Time in America" it shows Robert De Niro opening up a station locker to get a suitcase full of money. His friends had been using it for decades to store money, as a makeshift safe deposit box.

I know that things were a lot different before September 2001, but does this sound plausible?

It's the same locker but I don't think it was used continuously.

After Noodles thinks his buddies are all dead and he moves away Max takes the money from the locker and goes to LA.

The locker is only used again 30 years later when Max puts new cash in there to lure Noodles.

***SPOILER ALERT*** ***SPOILER ALERT***

After watching it again today I have a new theory. I wonder if everything after the 1968 scenes were all just an opium dream. You can see Robert De Niro smiling at the end. It was also kind of strange when Max walked away from his mansion gate and disappeared after garbage truck passed between them. Then a few seconds later you see a car of young partying people from the roaring 20's passing by in a car going the opposite direction of the truck.
