Thought this deserves its own thread (and yes, I searched and found none for general discussion).

Was pleased by Vonn's performance in the woman's badass downhill skiing competition (can't remember the English name), but MAN Paerson went down! That jump was probably around 60 metres. Never seen a course in which so many excellent downhill skiiers has gone down like that. I mean, what was it, about ever fifth contender? Insane.

Also looking forward to the men's sprint in cross country. Northug really blew it on the 15 kilomter, but at least we should have a gold medal there.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I see a lot more people falling in the figure skating than any other year I can remember. It doesn't seem like they're trying more difficult jumps either.

I'm really diggin the snowboard events even though I was always a skier. I'm also looking forward to seeing the downhill.

Hopefully NBC will grow a set and cover the biathalon events. I realize the feel guns are evil but it's the Olympics for crying out loud :rollno:

I LOVE the Olympics - espeically winter! I wish NBC's coverage was deeper, and a little less US-centric, but I understand that they are playing to a particular audience.

I was very impressed with Wescott's win in the Snowboard-Cross. He stayed focused and determined, and worked every inch of the track for all the speed he could get. A true champion's performance, for sure.

I'm very excited to see the coverage of the Women's DH tonight. Watching skiing reminds me of how long it's been since I've been on the snow, and how much I miss carving big, fast arcs down a steep slope (although, I doubt I have the strength or fitness to ski like I used to).

I love the winter Olympics, too.

I was in Lake Placid for a few days during the Albertville Olympics (Lake Placid really parties during the Olympics, even when they're elsewhere), and one of the TV channels in my hotel was the CBC. It was fun watching the Olympics televised with a similar production style as I was used to but with different angles and people. It was both familiar and different, kind of like when Saturday Night Live starts a season with a totally new cast.

Two years later when the Olympics were in Lillehammer, I spent some of that time in Amsterdam and could watch them on broadcast services from about seven or eight different countries, all in different languages. I could at least read text on most of them but couldn't understand most of the spoken audio except for what was in English. Still, it was fascinating to see the different perspectives.

I spent my days as a young'un and an older'un skiing there. My first time was at Brodie in western Massachusetts.

We also waterski down here :D That can be hardcore :p

They had biathalon events on over the weekend. I was
surprised to see no Finnish or Russian (Siberian) competitors
as those people are the baddest skiers with guns ever.

The pairs skating was weird. One guy was skating with this
cute babe, and his wife, who just had a baby, was cheering him
on in the stands. My wife would have had a shotgun. Another
guy was married to a woman on a competing team. Quite a little
community they have going.

The men's skating outfits look like they were right out of the disco
band era. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing that in public.
The ladies outfits are always a lot cuter. How come the ladies
hockey teams can't get outfits like that?

Another weird thing. The Canadian who won the first gold
medal. The guy next to him who took silver was a
multimillionair from his 'internet marketing company'. Pretty
PC. Guy is a huge SPAMMER. Somebody please take that
guy down. Maybe we can get one of the Finns ... err, skip
that.

Also, the Canadian is on the podium. He may not be the
sharpest chisel in the box, or maybe he was toasted, nawww,
snowboarder, couldn't be, but they are hanging a medal on him
and playing the National Anthem. You think he might take wool
hat off? Don't people usually take off their hats off around here
when they play the SSB? It's different up there, eh? Or has
respect for flag and country among youth deteriorated there as well?

Also, I am wondering what brand of formaldehyde they inject
into Bob Costas. He looks the same as he did in 1972. He must
have got the secret formula from Dick Clark.

How come there are no snowmobile races in the Winter Olympics?
I mean, that's a sport'n'all, ain't it? They shouldn't
be allowed to use number 3 though. Respect and all. Y'know?

Been to Brodie, Catamount and Butternut many times back in the day. My favorite hangouts were Killington and Bromley. We had friends with condos there. Ahhhhhhhhhhh..........those days :cool:

I went to the Russia/Latvia game last night. It felt like an All-Star game at least for Russia. I only knew a couple guys on Latvia. I'll be back up this weekend to go to a couple more games. I hope to have more time to hang around in Vancouver too. Last night, we drove in for the game, and right back out.

Why isn't CBUT showing any coverage? Does NBC have the worldwide rights to broadcast?

Funny. The 'spammer' is a Canadian too, who moved to Australia in 2001 in to 'pursue his company interests'. He wouldn't give any interviews to the Canadian Press, and looked as if someone had pissed in his vegemite standing up on the podium. As for the gold-medal winning skier (not 'boarder), he's from Quebec, and as such, is a law unto himself;). I have no idea what the accepted protocol is regarding doffing caps or tuques when the Canadian National Anthem is being played. Suffice it to say, it probably varies regionally.

Great analysis :D The figure skaters certainly do run in a unique group. You have a 25 year old guy who's married to another skater, skating with a girl who's 17 and they've been practicing together for like 3 years :rollno: You couldn't write a soap opera that strange. Then there's Costas and Dick Button hamming it up and that woman with the creapy, deep Bea Arthur voice :eyebrow:

That Australian/Canadian guy is an arrogant BUTTCHEEZE. I was wanting to SCHMACK him through the TV :mad: He needs to take some lessons from Shaun White on how to be successful without being an twit.

I love Killington. It's a blast to ski all day without having to repeat runs more than once or twice. Okemo was another favorite of mine--not as big as Killington but a lot less built up and commercialized.

I remember Okemo as well. I don't remember skiing there though. Every year we attended events at Stratton. That was a fun place. I also went on an annual bus trip to Mont Tremblanc. Those were the days :cool:

I missed the biathlon? Crap. I like that event. I would've liked to try that sport.

I'm not usually given to schadenfreude but I really wanted to see the spammer do a faceplant. A big one. Hard. On ice. Two faceplants actually.

Bob Costas looks sort of like he used to, but there seems to be a weird translucence to his cheeks now. I don't wanna know. Al Michaels looks like he just announced the Miracle on Ice.

Dick Button seems much more curmudgeonly than he used to.
