Actually, I found that the Variax bass played very well; I really like the original neck. I just didn't really like the looks, hence the jazz.

I'm still undecided about the pickguard overhang; it doesn't bother me at all, and kinda adds a "what the?" factor. Since I've got essentially zero crafting skills, I'm primarily worried that I'd really botch it up of I gave it a shot. However, now that I know how to detach the electronics from the pickguard (I initially thought it was too labor-intensive) I might one day make a template with the right curves I need and shape it more like a jazz...maybe include a custom silver pot plate, too.

My underlying goal behind the project was to see if it could be done without me totally frying $1,000 worth of electronics. Yes, pretty expensive experiment, but it leads me to believe the electronics can be put into any shape bass you want. I'm not about to do the custom build that the other guy did (wonderful job, too) as I don't have those skills, but I am thinking about other possibilities. Someone had mentioned on the other thread about not liking the Variax bridge. Well, the individual piezo elements are fitted into the barrels, then connected to a circuit board that's fitted underneath the bridge. Someone with the right tools/time would be able to modify any existing bridge with a little drilling and whatnot.
