Hey everyone!

I just put up a video and blog post on my website. It's a short introduction to a very interesting style of music from Caracas, Venezuela called Merengue Venezolano.

You can read more about it in the blog, but basically it's a 5/8 groove where the bass sometimes leaves out beat 1. I'll be putting up more videos of other songs in this style too, but I wanted to start with "Acidito" by Cecilia Todd. The original bass player on the recording is the amazing David Peña.



Hope you guys enjoy checking it out. It's a new style for me in comparison to Afro Cuban music, but I'm super hooked on it right now! Hopefully I do it justice.

Thank you man! I'm really glad you like it. I'm originally from Syracuse so it's great to get responses from fellow central and western New Yorkers on this thread! I'll probably put up a new one next week so keep an eye out. Thanks again.

I saw that you were from Syracuse. I wish I would've had a chance to meet you before you moved to Chicago and NYC. And you met John Benitez!! I love Afro-Cuban music which is why I purchased his book and I'm always looking for more authentic sources or references because I didn't grow up listening to it. Thanks to your reference I'm tracking down a copy of "En Vivo en Argentina" as we speak. Last year I dragged my wife to Aruba just for a chance to hear Ruben Blades live. She only knew him from Fear the Walking Dead.

Yeah, I haven't lived there in a long time. I visit a lot now that I live in NYC, mostly because my parents and sister are still there.

"En Vivo en Argentina" is great. However, "Una Sola Vida Tengo" is where this track is from, just in case you didn't know.

Thank you for buying the Benitez Book. I'll be releasing the second volume in the next few months. You'll see it on my website when it comes out.
