Versatile Bass?

Since you didn't mention a budget, I assume you could afford to call Roger Sadowsky's shop. :smug:

+1

Their basses all have an active/passive circuit. If you buy a 2 pickup bass (J, P/J, soap bar, big singles,...) you have tons of possibilities. Their tone control also works in active mode by the way.
If you buy a Will Lee model, you also have a mid on/off switch at your disposal, with internal selectable frequency (500/800 Hz) and Q (wide/narrow). All Will Lee 4-strings have a D-tuner standard.

Another possibility is to contact a small builder like Stambaugh, Bordwell, ... (there are many) and ask them what you like. My Stambaugh has a J in the neck, a MM in the bridge with switchable coils inside (neck, bridge, both). It's also active/passive with the tone knob also working in active mode and in active mode, there's also a piezo in the bridge. All pickups (J, MM, piezo) have separate control knobs for volume. Just an example. The sky is the limit, really.

That said, before I knew Sadowsky's instruments, I've played a plain J, P or Stingray and they all did the job.
That said, after I bought my first Sadowsky, I knew it wouldn't be my last.
