Looking for a bit of advice, before I started work on my room I sold off my protools stuff and purchased a new computer.
What I've found is some really interesting uses for my A&H Zed10 and it's stereo USB interface, while it's not a great tool for recording, it does work very well as the default audio interface with my Imac so I can listen to Itunes, Ireal or Youtube, I can do it either with my powered monitors or headphones. And if I just want to play my bass or use it as a mixer with headphones or through the monitors I don't have to even turn on the computer. It allows me to sit down turn it on and be practicing, without routing anything or pulling the track into protools or garage band.
So in now wanting to upgrade my audio interface I do not want to lose any of that functionality, the Motu 828 has the buzz word "built in mixer" and "stand alone" which would allow me the same capabilities, apparently the RME Firefox UFX has similar capabilities? I'm not opposed to a small desktop mixer with multi channel audio interface.
My new Imac does have thunderbolt, so that or USB is fine.
Primary use is as I stated above for practicing, sometimes recording my practicing and occassional recording of a small jazz combo so it needs to be expandable to accept 8 channels from an external preamp. Also function as a small mixer for rehearsals and MOST important it needs to be user friendly enough that my 6 year old can use it for audio along with the computer on his own.
