Versatility and Producing

Janek,

I'm primarily a jazz musician, however, I've recently been asked to play a lot of pop gigs and I'm really digging it. I have some good ideas but I'd really like to delve deeper into producing and being able to hear a rough track and have suggestions that will really have a positive impact. I was wondering if you could recommend any albums to start listening to as well as give some insight into what you think your influences are when your acting as a producer as well as any other insight you may have on the topic. Thanks!

James

that's a tough one to answer as personal taste comes into what influences me when I'm producing, and that's different for everyone.

I've always been drawn to albums that had something unique about them, whether it was from a writing, playing, or sound point of view. I would suggest just being really aware of what's going on around you when you're on a record date, and make notes about mics, setup, tone, vibe, number of takes, length of songs, and all the things that make up a good production. I learned about it by doing just that. Being aware of what was going on around me and asking questions about stuff I didn't understand.

start paying attention to what it is you like about albums, and try to recreate some of those aspects in the studio. This will help to give you a unique voice as a producer as you understand what other people have done before you, and then build upon that to make your own decisions about producing music.

Easy,

Janek
