When I say that I'm "very new" it is not an exaggeration - I am currently just learning the musical alphabet and memorizing their locations on the fretboard. So, extremely new.
I decided about 2 weeks ago that, at age 45, I'd very much like to learn how to play an instrument. I've wanted to do this for years and years; however, money, time, and/or confidence got in the way.
I think I have always loved the bass guitar but never really thought about it. Then, one day, I managed to catch a slide in Yes' "Long Distance Runaround" and it gave me chills. I listened to this song over and over, concentrating on the bass. Later, I thought about how many of my favorite songs have a great bassline to them.
I've bought my bass and amp this past week and am currently setting up lessons -- though I have been learning a bit on my own before I start them. My ultimate goal is to have fun playing along with some of my favorite songs. Anything else (such as finding local musicians to casually play with) will be a bonus. Totally going into this with reasonable expectations, including that any proficiency will be a result of hard work and practice. I have A LOT to learn at this point.
Anyway, I've already learned a lot by browsing the forums. I probably won't have much to contribute except on a general level. My avatar is in honor of Chris Squire, my inspiration for deciding to learn to play the bass. My handle is in honor of my favorite band, Jethro Tull.
