+1 I'll throw in my 2 cents (which is maybe what my opinion is worth at most).

To me, the King Moretones are recognizable by their very distinctive corners (like nipples). I'd love to have one of these basses which apparently are monstrous in volume. I watch e-bay regularly for one to pop up at the right price.

What kind of gave me a little giggle was the OP's remark about it being a "very old instrument". I can see why you thought that, man. It is a bit confusing.
Any laminate bass can hardly be considered "very old" in the true sense of the words.
Do a search under Gasparo Da Salo if you want "very old".
Nice find though, man. Have fun with it.
But please do make yer bed.

Interesting varnish job, definitely makes it look old. I think it's a ply, not sure if it's a King. You must be able to tell if it's a ply or not TJ, maybe just start with that and move on. The kings I've seen have a kind of rounded ff hole, not cut sharply, almost as if they were punched instead of carved. Outline says king, outerlinings says king, back says king.

And what's with the nipples...you have no idea what a random comment like that does to the old guys!

Im not talking the varnish, but the wood and its damage. i have never seen a bass less than 120 years old that looks like that. I could compare this to the prescott that was on ebay! Very distinct

Show me a king that the wood looks just like this, and Im going to buy it!!!! Man... if my kay were like this...... haha. Kings, I guess, had some very nice instruments for their time.

I don't think I believe what I'm reading.
Lookit the hole in the top near the treble C-bout. YES it's a HOLE where the top vaneer got torn away. Lookit all the crooked cracks in the top layer vaneer. Carved wood doesn't crack like that. It cracks perfectly straight, up and down with the grain of the wood.
You guys ever heard of Arnold Schnitzer?

I apologize for my previous, sarcastic comment. It was wrong.

Now, I'd like to contribute positively to the conversation. I have not seen many basses, so I don't know what it is. If Arnold is sayin' it's a King, I'm with him. It certainly doesn't look like any of the old american plywoods I've seen pictures of on the internet. That makes me wonder if it was re-finished and fiddled with in an attempt to make it look like an old european instrument. I hope the OP didn't get scammed.
