I've been meaning to DIY the Ginger pedal some day but now that VFE are building them I'm very tempted to buy it ready made. Anyone here tried the VFE version?

No, but I'm ordering one as soon as I've finished my graphics!

It's an overdrive pedal modelled on the Ampeg SB-12 Portaflex amplifier.

Same here. I have been thinking of the Leeds Fuzz (byoc) and the Ginger as projects I would like to do next year. But, between the customization options and the relay switch, I am thinking the VFE ginger might be worth the extra money.

  7. Mine's called "Ginger Vitus", but I haven't worked out the graphics yet. Well, nor have I built it yet. Okay, so I don't actually build pedals just yet....

    Hmm, VFE...

I got one about a week ago. So far I love it. I use it as an always on "tone enhancer."

I don't know what an sb-12 is supposed to sound like, but I know that this pedals helps me achieve the old school sounds that I enjoy.

Tons of low end and gain on tap with this thing. Right now I keep the gain at about 9 o clock, set the level for unity gain, and adjust the bass and treble controls to taste for whatever bass I'm using.

Feel free to ask any questions!!

Just recorded an EP today. Used the ginger into a UA Solo 610 for the whole thing.

I believe the studio engineer put it through an 1176 and that was it. When I get copies of it, I'll post some samples.

Received mine and used on gig, sounds very nice, and the bass knob is helpful! I use it at minimum or close to minimum gain though, as I just need some grit :)

The Fuzz Bear is great! I love the look of it, and I think it sounds fantastic. The fuzz intensity control isn't very useful. Just kind goes to extreme to barely more extreme. At least to my ears. The other controls do offer a lot of variety though. I don't find the sag control and the random noise it creates useful for "conventional" bass playing, but it can be cool. I took it off my board right now because I don't need a fuzz that heavy right now when I play live.

Also, I got 2 of the tracks I did with the Ginger back. PM me your email if youd like to hear them!

I should note that the bass isn't up front of the mix, so it's more of a showcase of how it works in a band mix than of the pedal itself.

How does the Ginger compare to the Barbershop?

I like the looks of the Ginger... I have recently (as last night rehearsal with my electronic doomer band) decided that the VFE Woodchipper is the king of all my fuzzy pedals, which include an MXR Distortion and a DG Duality. The reason is that little bass knob VFE put on the Woodchipper.

I think I'm going to have to try one.

To anyone who's tried both the ginger and the barbershop, which do you think would be best to cop a Jamerson tone, like this:

Not tried the Ginger but the Bearfoot Blueberry cops the Jamerson/Motown sound so well that your contest should be been those two, I wouldn't even bother considering the Barbershop.
