Vibrating Noise

I've had three Peavey combo amps in the past 15 years and they ALL developed resonant vibration problems.

What happened with each one was the cabinets are made of pressed wood and are held together with staples and glue so, over time, the joints get loose and the sides of the cabinet vibrate.

The solution is to remove the speaker and install a bit of bracing inside the cabinet at strategic points to damp out the vibrations. In general, use 1" x 2" strips of wood that you glue (or epoxy) and screw across the length of each side (with the 1" edge being the one that glues to the cabinet). Then force glue or epoxy into all the joints and run screws into the wood if necessary.

I've done this treatment to each my Peaveys and it's completely fixed the vibration problems I had.
 
Sounds labor intensive. Wouldn't a can of some foam sealant (like Great Stuff) do the job & be much easier?


No. With each of the first two amps that had the vibration problem I tried to take the easy way out and do the minimum amount of work and I found that I needed to have the strips of wood glued in. With the third amp I just went ahead and did it knowing I would have to in the end, anyway.




The idea is to keep the side panels from vibrating and you'll need exactly 4 strips of 1" x 2" pieces of wood for that (you don't need them for the top and bottom). The strips of wood add the necessary rigid mass to the panels that you won't get with just a bit of foam.

And it isn't really necessary to use screws at all with a good quality wood glue (or better yet, epoxy) since all the screws are doing is holding the wood together until the adhesive dries. You can save a lot of time and hassle by omitting the screws.
